Security forces in the Mardin region are working to find father Edip Daniel Savci, who went missing late Wednesday, Interior Minister Besir Atalay told reporters in Ankara Thursday.
Savci, a priest at the Mor Yakup Monastery in the south eastern province of Mardin, was reported missing after his car was found abandoned Wednesday.
According to a statement issued by the Mardin Governors office, an unidentified person later called a priest from the Syriac community and asked for 300,000 euro as a ransom to release Savci.
There are an estimated 25,000 members of Turkeys Syriac Christian community, most of them living in Mardin or Istanbul.
