Turkey declares official heat holiday for sick, pregnant and disabled public servants

Turkey is expecting record high temperatures on Wednesday.

ANKARA - In line with a Turkish Health Ministry directive for provincial governors to use their discretion over dealing with the country’s near record temperatures, a number of provinces have declared a holiday for some public servants Tuesday.

The provincial governors of Istanbul, Izmir and Bursa have announced public servants with chronic illnesses, or who have disabilities or who are pregnant do not have to go to work on Tuesday and Wednesday.

In Izmir, the holiday has been extended for an extra day.

Authorities have warned people to avoid going outside unless they had to.

Turkey’s Meteorology Bureau said that temperatures would return to normal seasonal averages on Friday.
