Turkish artists protest against plans to demolish the AKM

There are plans to knock down AKM in the central Taksim district of Istanbul and build a congregation centre.

ISTANBUL - A group of artists on Monday demonstrated against government plans to demolish the Ataturk Cultural Centre (AKM) and the Mushin Ertugrul theatre hall in down town Istanbul.

Many artists from the world of Turkish theatre, opera, ballet and music protested staged a protest the day before international theatre day, saying they would oppose any move to turn AKM into a commercial money maker.

Artists warned that private theatres were at the point of disappearing and that state ones were threatened by demolition.

The protest was a colourful one with opera pieces being performed and poetry recited in front of the AKM building.
