ISTANBUL - Shipping traffic in Istanbuls Bosphorus Strait, which links the Black Sea with the Sea of Marmara, was suspended early Wednesday morning after a freighter collided with a pontoon being used to construct a tunnelbeneath the busy waterway.
The Russian-flagged cargo ship the Volgodon 213 rammed the construction pontoon, which was moored off the coast of Istanbuls Kandilli district at the southern end of the strait, in the early hours of the morning, Turkish maritime authorities said.
The vessel, which was en route from the Black Sea, was not carrying a pilot at the time of the collision. Tugboats of the Coastal Security and Vessel Rescue Administration working to free the vessel.
