DIYARBAKIR/SIRNAK - Seventeen people died in the south eastern Turkish province of Diyarbakir early Wednesday as the result of heavy flooding in the region brought on by torrential rains.
The deaths in Diyarbakir took to 20 the toll from floods across the country earlier Wednesday.
Fourteen of those killed lost their lives when a minibus travelling from Diyarbakir to the city of Sirnak was swept off the road. Three other persons drowned elsewhere in Diyarbakir during the floods and a further three drowned in Sirnak.
In the south eastern province of Sanliurfa some 200 cattle died and four houses collapsed while four villages near the Cullap Stream had to be evacuated due to rising waters.
The road between Antalya and Alanya in southern Turkey has been cut due to flooding, while in the Kizkale district of Mersin in the south of the country dozens of parked vehicles washed into the sea.
