ANKARA - Turkey is considering buying 30 new F-16 fighter aircraft as a possible stop gap measure until such time as a new generation of tactical fighters become available.
The latest edition of the US magazine Defense News carries an article citing a Turkish official as saying that Turkey is planning to buy 30 of the F-16 Block 52+, the most recent upgrade of the long serving F-16 series. There were ongoing talks between Turkey and the US firm Lockheed Martin Industry regarding the potential purchase and an agreement could be finalised in the next few months, the official was quoted as saying.
If the deal goes ahead, the price tag for the aircraft would be in the vicinity of $1.5 billion.
