EDIRNE - The western Turkish city of Edirne bordering Greece and Bulgaria has been inundated by floodwaters Tuesday after heavy rainfall and from water running off after Bulgaria opened the gates of dams upriver from the city.
The two rivers that run through the city, the Meric and the Arda overflowed their banks and the districts of Karaagac and Bosnakoy and region where famous oiled wrestling festival is held in Edirne are all under water.
Power cannot be provided to four districts in the city and the heavy rainfall is expected to continue for the day.
Cultivated fields and vineyards throughout the region around Edirne have also been flooded and crops damaged. Water levels in the Arda River are at their highest for the past 25 years.
The governor of Edirne, Nusret Miroglu, said that the region has been declared a disaster zone. Elsewhere in the province of Edirne, there are late season snow falls in the township of Uzunkopru.
