Bar Association goes to Council of State over drinking decree
The Ankara Bar Association applied to the Council of State to open a court case to overturn a decree issued by the Interior Ministry banning alcohol consumption in built up areas and the setting aside of special streets for the sale of alcohol.

ANKARA - The Ankara Bar Association said that a government scheme of having red street drinking zones would lead to polarisation and have a negative impact on tourism.

The Bar Association has opposed the decision of Interior Ministry decree calling for the establishment of designated “red street” zones for drinking. The Association used as a precedent the decision issued by the council of the southern Mediterranean city of Antalya declaring the whole of Antalya as a drinking zone.

The Association claimed that the “red streets” scheme was against the state of law, equality and the right to work covered under the constitution. In its application the Association claimed that drinking bans were being imposed by the municipality and such practises had shaken the faith in receiving justice in Turkey.
