ANKARA - Draft legislation was tabled with the Turkish parliament Tuesday to authorise the establishment of 15 new universities across the country.
The draft bill, submitted by the government, foresees the setting up of new universities in Kirsehir, Kastamonu, Duzce, Burdur, Usak, Rize, Tekirdag, Erzincan, Aksaray, Giresun, Corum, Yozgat, Adiyaman, Ordu and Amasya.
At present, Turkey has 77 universities, with 53 of them being operated by the state and the remaining 24 being private institutions. The proposed new universities are to be built in part to cater to the increasing number of students across the country. Currently, there are more than one million students attending institutions of higher learning in Turkey.
