ANKARA - Turkeys National Security Council (MGK) has agreed to the wording of a revision of document setting out the countrys security policies and priorities.
At its regular meeting on Tuesday, the MGK approved the new National Security Policy Document (MGSB), which retained some of the major priorities of past security policies but also changed the emphasis in other areas.
The new document gives a more determined definition of the role of the military in domestic security. In the amended document, the dangers posed by religious fundamentalism, separatism and extreme left wing activity remained as the most likely source of threats to the Turkish nation, while the risk of extreme right wing activism was removed.
The MCSB still has to be ratified by the cabinet. The MGK meeting, held after a two month break, stressed the determination of Turkey to become a full member of the European Union but underlined the need to take into account national interests.
