No cases of severe physical torture in Diyarbakir: IHD
Many of the complaints of human rights abuses in the south east involved children, Demirtas said.
May 6— It was pleasing that there had been no allegations of severe physical torture in the south eastern Turkish city of Diyarbakir in 2004, the head of the local human rights organisation said Friday.

  Selahattin Demirtas, the head of the Diyarbakir branch of the Human Rights Association (IHD) said that his organisation had received 209 complaints alleging the use of torture in Diyarbakir in 2004. However, none had involved cases of extreme abuse, he said.
       “In 2004 report there is no complaints in relation to torture methods such as electrification, bastinado and the Palestinian hanger. This is a pleasing situation for us,” Demirtas said.
       Demirtas said that across the south east of the country, there were 746 instances of children being the target of human right abuses, with 16 of these resulting in death.
       Last year, the IHD had received 109 complaints of human rights abuses in the whole region, with two of these cases involving cases of honour killings, he said.
       In the south east of the country there had been 96 suicide cases last year and that the highest instance of suicide was in Diyarbakir with 21 incidents.
