Dozens of the apartments built by Gocer’s company collapsed in the massive quake in north western Turkey.

Veli Gocer was convicted by a court in the central Turkish city of Konya of causing the death of more than one person by negligence and carelessness.
Following the August 17, 1999 quake, which had its epic centre in Izmit in north western Turkey, Gocer went into hiding but was found by angry quake survivors and nearly lynched. He was later detained by police though it has taken more than five years for his court case to be finalised.
Prosecutors showed that many of the cut price accommodation blocks Gocer’s company built had been constructed using sub-standard materials and did not met minimum safety requirements.
