Ulgur Gokhan, the mayor of Canakkale, the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy, said that Latacz had been awarded the prize in recognition of his research and study on Troy and in particular for his work on ancient languages.
The ten year long war of Troy, which pitted the Trojans against the invading Greeks, was immortalised in the epic poem the Illiad by the Greek poet Homer. Interest in the campaign and the ancient city has recently been revitalised through the Hollywood blockbuster Troy, staring Brad Pitt and Eric Bana.
The first International Homer Poetry Award was given to Christian Wolf and the second to prominent Turkish writer Yasar Kemal. | |
