The two systems will be deployed around strategic or sensitive areas in Turkey, with the objective of warding off any missile attack that might be launched against Turkish territory. The other three Patriot batteries already stationed in Turkey have been provided and are manned by Norway.
There was also discussion within NATO on Wednesday of ways to bolster Turkey’s capability to withstand chemical and biological attacks, with Hungary, the Czech Republic and Norway offering to provide assistance to Turkey.
“We’re talking about protective gear, suits and gas masks, but also detection and monitoring equipment,” the Reuters news agency quoted one NATO official as saying.
